THANET SILVERLIGHT

c.1948 Thanet Silverlight Touring Bike - Barn Find

c.1948 Thanet Silverlight Touring Bike - Barn Find

A rare Thanet Silverlight touring bicycle from 1948/ 49. Frame number SL1349. Been in long term storage with a collection of other classic racing bikes. These unusual bicycle frames were designed by Les Cassell originally from the Isle of Thanet in Kent, England and then from shop premisses in Bristol, England. The unusual bottom bracket mounting is said to be base on Aircraft design principals; suspended the same way aircraft engines were mounted.

The bike is mostly original with beautiful lugwork and the classic Thanet 'T' in the headstock of the frame and also down both sides of the front forks. The frame has original paintwork and chroming and remains of the original makers transfers are still evident, however the green paint has been 'touched up' in places particularly around the seat post lug where evidence of a small crack can be seen (see images). This would need to be addressed and repaired sympathetically. The paint has also been rubbed away on the rear seat stays of the frame showing it was once fitted with a touring saddle bag.

The bike is equipped as would be expected for a touring bike of this period. 26 inch alloy wheels with an AM Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub gear. Black Bluemels mudguards, Brooks leather B17 saddle, GB handlebars and brakes.

Offered for sale in as found condition and ready for the next owner and rider to service, repair and enjoy on classic bicycle, motoring and is this case; also aviation events.
